Our Groups and Labs
Dynamic Project Management (DPM) Group
Dynamic Project Management (DPM) group aims at understanding and managing the construction dynamics in large-scale construction projects. Particularly, we strive to support diverse decision making processes in order to manage schedule, cost, and quality as well as sustainability and safety using emerging technologies. We also have a great interest in how the decisions are made can affect people’s behavior and ultimately, would like to incorporate it to support the decision making processes. To this end, we use computer simulation (System Dynamics, Discrete Event Simulation, and Agent-based Modeling), automatic data capture and tracking technologies (computer vision, wireless sensor network, RFID equivalent technologies, and emission sensor), and visualization techniques.

Laboratory for Interactive Visualization in Engineering (LIVE)
The Laboratory for Interactive Visualization in Engineering (LIVE) conducts research in graphical and information visualization, and develops new technologies that help solve challenging engineering problems. The laboratory has significant expertise and experience in visual simulation, virtual and augmented reality, indoor and outdoor positioning systems, mobile computing, and its applications in construction, civil engineering, manufacturing, transportation, and other engineering domains. The LIVE is equipped with several pieces of computing, positioning, and reality-capture hardware. In addition, we design and assemble our own mobile computing platforms for visualization and location-aware computing applications. The laboratory has also developed several pieces of software that run on our computing platforms and implement the ideas developed in our research.

Launching the first Construction Management graduate program in the world in 1954, the University of Michigan CEE department has established itself as a key player in construction research and education. That leadership position will be further enhanced, thanks to a significant gift from John Tishman.
